about

maxwell's debut single - "(I'm Asking You to) Break Up With Me" - is an explosion of desperation, pettiness and heartbreak. a breakup song for a breakup you're willing into existence, but don't have the guts to do. about self-sabotage and pleading. set over a hyper-synth-pop sound, it reincarnates the big sound of the human league or heaven 17 with an added synthetic bite.

lyrics

i wish i was brave enough to confess
without all my dance moves, without all the stress
we know you've been patient, too patient at times
and you're sick of pretending you're so fucking kind
confessing and dressing seem pointless together
like i'm pulling the focus from you to the weather
always rains when we fight - oh ain't it poetic?
the fallacy i have for you is pathetic.....

you think i've got in me to change? in your dreams i've been changing?
well, this is strange:
in my dreams, i've been cheating on you in exchange... (change, change, change!)

well this feels like we're getting to some kind of truth - i'm feckless, i'm lazy, i never pull through
the only thing i pull is me outta you
now i think it's time for you to push me out of this view

i'm asking you to break up with me
it's not about you, i just need you to see
that you'd feel so much better without all my crew
you could write, you could dance, whatever you do
i'm asking you to break up with me
i'm asking you so i don’t have to see
i’m asking you to break up with me
dump me here, i’m down on my knees

well, why can’t you see this from my point of view?
i’ve put in the hard work to get over you
i’ve lost my slim figure, no more the athlete
and i’ve listened to frank ocean songs on repeat
and still you won’t do it, won’t do what i ask
all these bad memories will glow in the past
you say that i’m choosing the coward’s way out
but how would a coward allow you to shout?

i’m asking you to break up with me
it’s not about you, i just need you to see
that dating me is a worthless task
but this time baby just do what i ask
i’m begging you break up with me
i’m begging you, just let me be free
i’m asking you to break up with me
i’m asking you, can you hear my plea?
break up with me!
but make it low key
and make it easy on me
don’t hurt my feelings please

oh, oh, oh

maxwell always wrote stories. at first, they were scribbles and dr who fan fic. some were screenplays, others were wet dreams.

maxwell jelbart - a 24-year-old naarm-based man with delusions of mystique - writes songs that will make you wanna run, wanna dance, wanna break down and send some nudes.

these are songs about being bold and ugly, being gay and desperate.
